A REVOLUTION IN COLD STORAGE INSULATION
When trying to make cold storage units more environmentally friendly, technicians focus on two main areas – insulation and the efficiency of the refrigeration unit itself.
Game-changing new insulation tech is at the heart of ArcticStore Horizon’s sustainability credentials. Thanks to newly developed vacuum insulation panels (VIPs), these hyper-efficient cold storage containers require up to 30% less energy than their predecessors.
This makes ArcticStore Horizon refrigerated containers more affordable than ever to run.
In addition to the energy savings they offer, ArcticStore Horizon containers take sustainability to new levels thanks to high-tech refrigerants that reduce the containers’ GWP (Global Warming Potential) by more than 99.9% – to just 0.5!
WHAT ARE GWP RATINGS – AND WHAT DOES ARCTICSTORE HORIZON DO DIFFERENTLY?
GWP (Global Warming Potential) ratings measure how much different gases trap heat in the atmosphere compared to CO2, which has a GWP of 1.
Up until very recently, most refrigerants used in fridges, freezers and other cooling systems had GWPs in the thousands – meaning each unit of these gases trapped thousands of times more heat than the same amount of CO2 over a 100-year period.
Starting in 2025, the U.S. requires new refrigerated transport equipment to use refrigerants with a GWP below 700. The EU, meanwhile, is phasing down HFCs almost entirely, with a full phaseout targeted by 2050. This regulatory push has already driven car makers to replace high-GWP R134a (GWP: 1,430) with far lower-GWP alternatives.
The leading alternative, R1234yf, has a GWP of just 0.5.
All ArcticStore Horizon containers use R1234yf refrigerant, which can safely be used thanks to newly engineered cooling units compared to CO2, which has a GWP of 1.
The net result is a drop in GWP levels by more than 99.9%. This is headline news for any business with cold storage needs that takes sustainability seriously.
TWO ADDITIONAL WAYS ARCTICSTORE HORIZON IS GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
In addition to ultra-low GWP refrigerants and advanced insulation, all ArcticStore Horizon containers are painted with water-based paint.
This eliminates the use of harmful oil-based alternatives.
While this may seem like a small change, it can add up – especially in the light of 2024 being a record year for container production.

Our rugged new solar panels, designed especially for the Horizon collection, fit to the roof of any container you hire from us and can be adjusted up to 45 degrees to catch the sun.
Testing shows our solar panels can typically offset up to 25% of the remaining energy use – and sometimes even more, depending on location.
When combined with the ~30% energy savings the Horizon collection’s superior insulation affords, this brings the potential total energy savings to nearly 55% compared to a traditional refrigerated container.
