When we think about the pandemic and the COVID-19 vaccine, we often think of the scientists, doctors, and nurses who have worked tirelessly over the last year to ensure we maintain public health and find a vaccine for the virus.
However, we often don’t stop to think about the huge network of cold chain logistics that make transporting huge volumes of these vaccinations possible. There are loaders, drivers, pilots and logistics specialists all working tirelessly at all hours to ensure everyone can access the vaccine as soon as possible.
In January, Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán gave the green light to a number of different vaccines, including those from Russia, China, and the AstraZeneca vaccine.
In the first hours of Easter Sunday, Orbán went to one of the warehouses where the COVID vaccines are stored until they are loaded onto lorries to take them on to their destinations all across Hungary. Each day at 4AM the trucks are loaded and the vaccines head out to their destinations.
The Prime Minister praised the logistics professionals helping to vaccinate the country and announced that he believed over 2.5 million Hungarian citizens would be vaccinated just a few days after Easter Monday.
Our ArcticStore cold storage containers have been used almost exclusively to transport the COVID vaccine across the world, including the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine that is shown in the video, as well as the Moderna, Janssen/Johnson & Johnson, Sputnik V and Corvishild.
Distributing a global supply of vaccines is a huge challenge, but one we have risen to meet. It has required global expansion of cold chain technologies, and we have strived to do that each and every day, building on our vast knowledge of specialized cold storage solutions. Our new UltraFreezers have been developed to meet the needs of all the vaccines currently being distributed, including the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. Our experience of working with bio and life science organisations as well as the pharmaceutical industry positioned us perfectly to see the needs and respond by creating a best-in-class cold chain tech solution.
The cold chain storage solutions used for COVID-19 vaccines must have safety as one of their highest priorities – they must be hygienic and maintain a minimum temperature to keep the vaccines safe.
As COVID-19 vaccines roll out across the globe, we are starting to see many countries open up and start the gradual return to normalcy. We have not only our doctors, nurses, and pharmaceutical specialists to thank, but the cold chain logistics experts and professionals that distribute the vaccines. To date (April 16, 2021), approximately 841 million people globally have been vaccinated, with Hungary (45 in every 100 people vaccinated), the UK (61 in every 100), US (59 per 100), UAE (97 in every 100), Bhutan (63 in every 100), and Chile (67 in every 100) leading the pack.
With our incredible cold chain solutions, including our new UltraFreezers, we’ll be able to distribute the vaccine quickly and safely wherever it’s needed, and continue to use our cold chain technology moving forward to advance the ease and safety of distributing vaccines and other biological supplies when necessary.
